Ford PCV Valves

The crankcase ventilation system is an important part of the internal combustion engine, removing unwanted gases away from the engine. This particular area of your system is crucial because it controls crankcase gases’ flow into the intake system.

If the volume of crankcase gases entering the intake system is too high, your engine will lose power and performance.

Can I drive with a faulty PCV valve?

Yes, you can, but we don’t advise that you attempt to drive too far. Your Ford will run very rough, and you may have issues with idling and the check engine light as well. But you should be able to safely get your Ford to the nearest mechanic or safe place to park so you can wait for a towing service.

How often should I check it?

These components should be regularly inspected and cleaned or replaced every 30,000 to 80,000 kilometres to prevent them from failing. It will usually be checked by your mechanic at regular inspections and replaced as required.

How do I know if there’s a problem?

The most significant early warning sign is excess oil consumption, which can be caused by a leak from the PCV. The crankcase pressure may increase and force more oil through the seals and gaskets, which would result in this excess consumption. This could also lead to white or blue smoke coming from the exhaust as the oil burns. Ultimately, this will make your engine begin to lose power and run rough, which will lead to the check engine light coming on and a trip to the mechanic.
