Rear axle oil seals
By: Don on 21 February 2026A while ago I installed a Bendix Drum brake upgrade to the rear of my Mazda BT 50, I was going to replace the rear wheel bearings at the same time only to find that my 11 tonne workshop press was not suitable as I couldn’t pass the backing plate through the bed of the press. As I had already removed the axle oil seals from the diff housing, I had to use the seals supplied with the rear wheel bearings at kits, and returned the kits to my parts shelf for later installation. Later last year we took a trip from Gabbadah WA to Lightning Ridge, NSW. We did the return trip mostly via dirt roads: The Cut line, Tibooburra, Cameron’s corner, Merty Merty, Strezlecki Track, Oodnadatta track, Marla, Amata, Gunbarrel Highway, Gt Central rd, Leonora,Lawlers, Agnew, Sandstone, Mt Magnet to home. At Warburton I noticed that the corrugated roads, made worse by the huge volumes of traffic to Lake Eyre from all directions, had taken its toll.. the rear diff housing had numerous cracks from the continuous flexing around the diff centre. Once home I sourced and ordered an aftermarket Dwiz diff housing. Installing this diff housing would require removal of the axles, diff centre etc , necessitating new rear axle seals to replace the ones I had used earlier from the kits. I returned to the source of the kits to see if I could buy individual parts, only to be sold 2x2 maybe these are them seals that didn’t fit. Enter Dr Google and Jefferson Ford.. a quick search of PX1 rear axle seals put me onto Jefferson Ford, where I was able to cheaply and with minimum effort, purchase the correct seals, enabling me to complete my installation of the new, much stronger housing. I will now use Jefferson Ford as my go to parts supplier for all OE parts for my Mazda BT 50. Great work team.
