Genuine Ford Steering Knuckles
What Are Ford Steering Knuckles?
The Ford steering knuckle, also known as a spindle or upright, is a strong metal component that connects your vehicle's suspension and steering systems together. It serves as the central mounting point for several critical parts including the wheel hub, brake caliper, control arms, and tie rod end.
The steering knuckle is typically made from cast iron or forged aluminium, designed to withstand immense forces from braking, cornering, and road impacts. It houses the wheel bearing and hub assembly, allowing the wheel to rotate freely while providing mounting points for suspension movement.
The knuckle also features an arm that connects to the steering rack via the tie rod end. When you turn your steering wheel, the tie rod moves the steering knuckle, which then pivots on the ball joints to point your wheel in the desired direction.
Symptoms of a Failing Ford Steering Knuckle
- Visible cracks or bending in the knuckle casting
- Excessive vibration felt through the steering wheel
- Uneven or rapid tyre wear on one wheel
- Poor wheel alignment that won't hold adjustment
- Brake caliper mounting issues or uneven brake wear
- Wheel bearing failure occurring repeatedly
- Vehicle pulling severely to one side
Can You Drive With a Broken Steering Knuckle?
No. Driving with a cracked, bent, or broken steering knuckle is extremely dangerous and should never be attempted. A steering knuckle failure while driving will cause immediate and complete loss of steering control on that wheel.
The wheel will no longer be properly located, potentially folding inward or outward unexpectedly. The brake caliper mounting may also fail, resulting in loss of braking on that wheel. At any speed above a crawl, this type of failure almost always leads to a serious accident.
If you suspect steering knuckle damage from hitting a large pothole, curb, or accident, have your vehicle towed to a qualified mechanic immediately. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle even a short distance.
