First-Generation Mazda BT-50 Engines (2006 – 2011)

The Mazda BT-50 and Ford Ranger of this generation have a similar structural architecture, but the BT-50 has flared wheel arches and leaf-shaped headlights similar to those on the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6.

The Mazda BT-50 models of this generation are powered by diesel engines carried over from Ford Duratorq:

  • 2.5 L MZR-CD: This BT-50 engine delivers 143 HP at 3500 RPM and 243 lb-ft of torque at 1800 RPM. It is available in five-speed manual transmission and is used in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants of the Mazda BT-50.
  • 3.0 L MZR-CD: This BT-50 engine produces 154 HP at 3200 RPM and 280 lb-ft of torque at 1800 RPM. It is available in five-speed manual or automatic transmissions and it is used in all-wheel drive variants of the Mazda BT-50.

Second-Generation Mazda BT-50 Engines (2011 – 2020)

Mazda and Ford eventually ended their partnership in 2008, but they continued to collaborate in developing the two trucks. In this generation, there are fewer similarities between the Mazda BT-50 and the Ford Ranger. The only structural components common between the two vehicles are the windshield, cabin structure, and some parts of the chassis.

The Mazda BT-50 models of this generation are powered by diesel engines carried over from Ford Duratorq:

  • 2.2 L MZ-CD: This BT-50 engine delivers 150 HP at 3700 RPM and 277 lb-ft of torque at 1500 RPM. It is available in five- and six-speed manual transmissions and used in rear-wheel drive variants of the Mazda BT-50.
  • 3.2 L MZ-CD: This BT-50 engine can produce 200 HP at 3000 RPM and 347 lb-ft of torque at 1750 RPM. It is available in six-speed manual or automatic transmissions and is used in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants of the Mazda BT-50.

Is the BT-50 engine reliable?

A Mazda BT-50 engine is known for its reliability across multiple generations. It is built to handle heavy workloads, but it can definitely benefit from regular maintenance to ensure they last longer. You can prolong their use by following these best practices:

  • Make sure you drive your ute at least twice a week so that the diesel particulate filter can regenerate.
  • Do not turn off the engine immediately after heavy hauling or towing.
  • Schedule regular engine servicing with a qualified mechanic.
  • Avoid running on reserve fuel to prevent corrosive sediments from reaching the engine.
  • Check your truck for leaks whenever it is parked.
  • Avoid driving over large rocks or submerging your vehicle in deep rivers when off-roading.
